How to Install a DSL Modem

How to Install a DSL Modem

DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) modem uses a copper wire transmission technology to access high speed broadband Internet over telephone lines. Although DSL internet connections use a phone line, you can talk on the phone and surf simultaneously. There are two kinds of DSL modems-ADSL modems and standard broadband modems. The installation process of a DSL modem is divided into two steps: connecting the DSL modem and setting up the DSL connection. Here's how you can install a DSL modem.

1). Ensure that you have all necessary equipment to connect the broadband modem. This includes the broadband modem, CD ROM with manual, Ethernet cable, telephone cord (in case of an ADSL modem) and power adapter. Contact the retailer or manufacturer of the broadband modem if any of the above equipment is missing.

2). Read the user manual to understand the function of each piece of equipment in the package.

3). If you have an ADSL connection, connect the telephone cord to the ADSL line port of the broadband modem. For all other broadband connections, your Internet service provider (ISP) will install a CAT5 or CAT6 cable that should be connected to the internet port of the broadband modem.

4). Connect the Ethernet cable from any of the Ethernet ports on the broadband modem to the LAN/Ethernet port of your computer.

5). Attach the power adapter to the modem, plug it in and switch it on. Verify the connectivity of all the devices before you begin the set up process.
